Assembling Beekeeping Equipment Part 1 - Assembling Frames
Great job guys. Something I was hoping you’d make a video on is your tool belt and what you find to be the best tools to keep in it for every day beekeeping. Thanks
I have one hive Russian hybrids. Everything seemed to be going ok until approximately 50 hives were placed less than a 1/4 mile away by a beekeeper that rented space at the farm nextdoor. They are Italian bees doing the robbing.🐝🐝🐝
how about the queen, where are you finding her out or how you make extra one. is there a video of it?
What if you are already running two deep bodies - can you add your third (laying worker hive on top) it’s almost the end of July here too. I’m new to this.
On the last split you made, why would you add a super next instead of a second deep first?
What material is that you are using for your inner cover?
Doesn't seem to be enough info on chalkbrood anywhere? I would think there wood be. People talk about requeening and I find that approach only works for those that don't have hygienic bees. However when you do have hygienic bees there is no info on it. I would think it's a serious disease and yet nobody seems to take it seriously? Although this is a good video it's very much lacking info on chalkbrood.
I live n Spain and vegetable shortening is hard to come by. Would pork lard be ok?
It might be ok. Maybe animals would want to eat your coated papers through
Ok, thanks much. @@UoGHoneyBeeResearchCentre
Paul hope you are doing OK there.
Okey dokey here! Thanks for checking in.
Hi there, if we have oxalic acid as a fluid(not crystals), 85% solution, how much should we add to the recipe?
If I did that to my bees, they would sting my arms and legs 100 times
Đàn ong đã đậu ổn định chúng ta có thể dùng tay nhẹ nhàng bắt chúng vào thùng. Chú ý không để kẹp vào chúng Nếu chúng đau chúng sẽ đốt bạn
For requeening and splitting a hive, in a 2 brood box situation, wondering that if I found my queen and kept her at the lower box for over a week and then split off the top box (queenless) could I just introduce a new laying queen in a cage 24 hours later? I think they would realize they are hopelessly queenless quickly and more apt to accept a new laying queen. What do you think? I want to move capped and older brood to another part of my apiary and not move the entire hive elsewhere. I’m tired of moving boxes so far away. I’m getting old. Haha
Hi Robert That should work well. You'd have good queen acceptance.
When you put the 2nd box on (im assuming this is to give them space for ventilation so that they dont overheat) do you put the frames in as well or do you lrave the 2nd box empty? My 2nd question is: how long do you wait once you've placed the hive in its location do you release them?
7 years on, and this video remains fully relevant to setting up and operating mini mating nucs. The titbits of information one can gleen from the operation here is instructive. The use of TempQueen and Queen Mandibular Pheromone remains eye-opening and not seen in many other mini nuc videos. The 14 day cycles, great guidance, thank you for the well presented video, and sharing such useful knowledge. 👍👍👍
Thanks for the comment. It is rewarding to hear from folks like you!
👍 In addition, I find it important to follow and note calender dates, use at least 3 sources of nurse worker bees, feed syrup late in the day, lock up bees 24hrs to reorientate if not moved. Use water paint and yacht varnish to colour the mini poly nucs.. there was something else ........
Can you make a video about producing an emergency Queen on a split high
No we don't use that method. See our video 'Why Buy Queens' for a more complete explanation.
These series is fantastic! I will be watching each and every episode!
Thanks Steven!
So I should do my split the day before so the next day when I introduced they know they are queenless?
Yes.
I am planning already for my winter/ spring set up for next spring. I like to re-queen to keep a fresh queen yearly. When would I plan on grafting (from my own bees) and replace my queen and still not allow my queen to go backwards in my honey production? Would I do this before the flow (when drones are flying) or after the flow has started or when the flow is over. My flow is generally over July 4th.
I'd suggest you graft just before the typical swarm season in your area.
Thank you, I have it in my calendar for 2025.
Hey Paul I’m in Nova Scotia would you say running doubles is better than running singles ? I know both can be done but what would you run I keep my bees outside in poly hives
We use singles exclusively. We have two videos outlining why and all our videos show the use of singles in our operation.
Addictive
Good work, as always!
Thanks Jack!
how come I can't find part 1?
It is called 'Singles vs Doubles"
Finally some good and correct advice about how to handle this problem!
Thanks for the vote of confidence Gary!
I’ve seen many of the component knots before. Lots of similarities to the truckies hitch. However, it’s fantastic to see a different real world application and the specialization for this particular application. This is one of the best knot education videos I’ve seen! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Lawrence! I am only good at tying a few knots. This is one of the most useful ones. Great to hear you appreciated the video.
Hi, can you please explain how to make a queen pheromone tube and how I can keep the sugar syrup fresh when working with mini nucs in 90 degree weather? Thanks
We use 2;1 sugar syrup. It keeps well. We buy the Temp Queen strips. From our FAQ... Queen Pheromone: The pheromone strips were developed in Canada. They are called Tempqueen and are made by Intko Supply Ltd. Suite 604, 3345 Kingsway VANCOUVER, BC, V5R 0A7 Canada (604) 356-7393. pheromonesupply@gmail.com. Mann Lake in the US and several Canadian bee supply companies carry them.
Great video. I’d like to add, if after hooking the rope loop before throwing, you can use a double half hitch with the other end of the rope to the second hook. This way you can tie both rows on the driver side. It makes for quicker tying and untying. Not as many trips back and forth around your truck to get the job done. Great video. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for the tip! I'll give that a try.
If you have this type of frames why then not making it 8 way mating nucs, 5 frames in one mating nuc is kinda a lot
We like the size of these nucs. They ride through variable conditions better than smaller nucs.
Really like your videos, Thank you for taking the time. I was raised just down the road in Ariss. Thanks again .
Thanks for the encouraging comments!
New to the wonderful world of beekeeping here in Alberta. Really, really appreciate all your content.
Thanks Terry! Good luck in your beekeeping endeavors!
Possible translation into Arabic for all lessons, thank you
How are you in short lol in this Texas I’d love to be in shorts/tee doing inspections but afraid I’d get lit up by the girls.
What size do you cut the canvas? I cut to fit and it’s shrank to the point of barely covering frames
Hi, I just established four four way nucs and I got some Problems. I installed bees in them, and in some of them the bees are just dead. I don't know why. In others, they are clustering on the lid and not on my frames. I mixed up bees out of honey supers for them. I gave them virgin queens.
try 8-frame Jumbo-Langstroth hive boxes! more good for small people like your typical young bee-enthusiast student/bachelor deg./master deg. female co-worker !!
I am in Southeast Texas and was shocked recently to find 8 out of 10 frames in my super already full of capped honey. The bees worked faster than me. I found myself running here and there to get extra supplies for more suppers and another hive I captured from a swarm. I also like the concept of single brood, mainly because it takes less time inspecting...
The government should pass a law that all queen bees wear a crown so we find her easier. Subscribe.
I've used pseudoscorpions for the last four years and I don't have mites. Also I personally as a hobby beekeeper neglect my bees, by neglect I mean that I don't go into the brood box and instead of weekly checks I do monthly. Also no other beekeeper gets anywhere near my bees and if I'm going to a communal apiary then I'm not going to wear anything that is likely to come into contact with my bees. I live in the Tyne Valley in North East England. It's cold, it's permanently raining, it's always windy and my apiary sits on a North facing slope.
Nice to see how the bees are quickly interested by the cage. 🐝
Could i use this instead of apivar?
Help please, I'm moving a swarm trap across my yard. It's a solid tall box with 5 frames and a lot of bees. I closed them up last night with 2 disc entrances set with the vents open. They are only 1 inch holes with small openings for ventilation. It will be close to 100 degrees out today. Can I still leave them closed in like this for 24 hours and open them up tomorrow morning? I don't want them to overheat but I do want them to reorientate so they don't go back to the other side of my yard. Thanks in advance.
Think about overheating vs orienting. It is very easy to overheat and kill hives. It's likely too late but give the bees plenty of ventilation next time. Cheers.
@@UoGHoneyBeeResearchCentre thank you, unfortunately it was a mess. I opened it up in the middle of the day, didn't wait 24 hours, and maybe salvaged them, but not all. Hard lesson learned 😥
Hello Paul, Do you have any video regarding the demaree method?… if so what is the link? Thank you
Hi There No we don't use that method so haven't done a video on the topic.
Where did you buy your mini nucs from I’ve been looking everywhere and trying to find the best price so far Amazon but a lot of them don’t have many reviews
See our FAQ here hbrc.ca/faq/ but Mann Lake in the US is our supplier. They are also available in Europe from other suppliers. I don't know where you live.
Great information!!
Thanks!
How is it that swarms can draw comb so fast and efficiently because only the very young bee’s secret wax correct?… and the very young bee’s are not swarming… mainly the foragers are leaving the hive with Queen correct? Thank you, Dave from WV and OH
Your the best, very clear, really stung me this video ❤❤
Working an active bed hive in shorts?? Keep an EpiPen at the ready??
I think this is my 3rd time watching this, I look for refreshers every year, lol. We witnessed some robbing behavior yesterday after I shook bees down out of supers. I obviously caused alot of confusion, but thats not something I've seen before when shaking bees down.
I believe that any program should include the help to bumblebee so the transmission of mites in decreased.
Do you have a problem with moisture?in ky I use quilt boxes to help control moisture.just wondering!!
